Asylum seekers II (letter)

by Michael Arnold

News Weekly, June 29, 2002

Just what is wrong with this country? Australia appears to be the only country in the world where the media, and apparently a vocal proportion of its people, think their Government should be more lenient on illegal immigrants. The world is watching us they say. The reality is that the rest of the world could not care less and is certainly not watching Australia.

Just compare this attitude with what is happening anywhere else, in Denmark for instance, where far more stringent rules have just been introduced, in the UK and all over Europe.

Have we gone stark staring mad? Or are we going to allow a weird collection of bleeding heart propagandists to obstruct a government that is acting only in the nation's interests?
