Refugees? (letter)

News Weekly, June 1, 2002
Sir,

We are told in the media about some of the attacks on white farmers in Zimbabwe and the murders that have occurred. What we are not told is that the situation in South Africa is, if anything, worse.

Since the end of apartheid, there have been at least 1,320 people - mainly whites - murdered on farms in South Africa. This gives a homicide victimisation rate of 264 per 100,000 of population, undoubtedly the highest in the world.

If the victims were not white, this would be called ethnic cleansing or genocide, and the United Nations and various human-rights groups would not remain indifferent.

R. Hughes,
Strathfield, NSW
