Plight of young home-buyers (letter)

by Bob Day

News Weekly, May 24, 2008

Thank you for highlighting the plight of young home-buyers in "How to make the Australian dream come true" (News Weekly, May 10, 2008).

I think this tragic situation will only be resolved when two important factors converge:

1). The acceptance that denying a whole generation of young home-buyers access to the housing market is a gross form of intergenerational hypocrisy (i.e., not allowing young people the same opportunities that the older generation had); and

2). The realisation that urban-planners have been providing seriously misleading information about the relative advantages/disadvantages of urban fringe growth vs. urban infill.
