Baby imports? (letter)

by Peter Townsend

News Weekly, June 21, 2008
Sir,

I refer to David Perrin's article, "Why abortion should remain a crime" (News Weekly, May 24, 2008).

Actor Hugh Jackman's wife, actress Deborah-Lee Furness, has been lobbying the federal government to relax the laws in relation to the adoption of babies from China.

She would be better off lobbying the government to stop the 100,000 abortions performed annually in Australia rather than lobbying to increase imported babies from China.

I feel for the childless couples, but if the women with unwanted pregnancies were paid the $5,000 that the government is talking about to give birth, then Chinese babies would be out of the equation.

Peter Townsend,
South Penrith, NSW
