Contemporary threats to Western society

by Mark Braham

News Weekly, September 16, 2006
There is little distinction between supporters of Hitler and today's journalists who condemn Israel in its legitimate efforts to defend itself, argues Mark Braham.

The belief that outbreaks of politicised religion are temporary detours on the road to secularisation was plausible in 1976, 1986, or even 1996. Today the argument is untenable," says Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life's Timothy Samuel Shah and Harvard University's Monica Duffy Toft in the July/August 2006 issue of Foreign Policy magazine.

According to Paul Kelly of The Australian: "At the beginning of the 20th century, a bare majority of the world's people, precisely 50 per cent, were Catholic, Protestant, Muslim or Hindu. At the beginning of the 21st century, nearly 64 per cent belonged to these religious groupings and the proportion may be closer to 70 per cent by 2025." (Paul Kelly, "A new kind of true believer". The Australian, August 23, 2006).

The belief that secularisation of society was steadily rising, its progress temporarily stalled by a dying breed of stubborn and aggressive believers has, at least since World War II, been promoted by leftist journalists.

Corruption of the media

Certainly in Australia, corruption of the media has found an intrepid researcher in Professor David Flint, a former chairman of the Australian Press Council and Australian Broadcasting Authority.

His bestselling Twilight of the Elites (2003) and Malice In Media Land (2005) have exposed journalists who, "having abandoned diligent and unbiased reporting", have become "unelected and unaccountable participants in the political process, requisitioning the airwaves of the public broadcasters as well as the columns of once great newspapers".

Nothing so exposes the threat to the western democracies as the liberal and secular "progressive" cult of absolute multiculturalism. Orthodox Jews, such as myself, are taught not to revile other faiths and their manner of worship; but this does not mean we accommodate the vile and inhuman practices that accompany certain cults and lifestyles of sexual perverts in modern society.

Leftist journalists are not simply responsible for undermining readers' faith, with all that implies in terms of traditional marriage, domestic harmony and responsible living; they promote attitudes which some would call treason.

All western democracies are today threatened by Islamist terrorists; such are being trained to a high degree of expertise in the use of terror weapons and terror tactics aimed to kill innocent civilians - men, women and children. They are mass murderers on the loose, skilled in the latest technology; they have worldwide contacts and no shortage of money.

Such is their twisted devotion to the cause that they are not concerned about killing their brother Muslims or Arabs, nor themselves. It is a cult of death in stark contrast to the Bible's teaching that our purpose in God's world is to live our faith, a far more difficult, and ultimately rewarding, task than dying for it.

Yet leftist journalists, fully aware of the dangers facing their country, protest when some would-be terrorist, like David Hicks, is captured by soldiers he is trained to kill, and whose admittedly unacceptable imprisonment without trial can hardly be blamed on the U.S. for two reasons.

First, the legal process has been delayed time and again by his legal adviser and, second, it is the terrorists who are making undeclared war, thus treacherously breaching the Geneva conventions of war. They cannot, on the one hand fight without rules like wild beasts, yet demand observance of the conventions of war on the other.

Then we have the underlying anti-Semitism which, if one digs deep enough, is the catalyst that moves all anti-Israel scribes.

As I have previously noted ("The endless mutations of anti-Semitism", News Weekly, August 19, 2006), the Arabs were determined to erase Israel from the map from the day it was created.

Now that Iran and Syria, through their proxy terrorist organisation, Hezbollah, believe they will have the means to do this with Iran's nuclear power, the anti-Semites are patiently awaiting a second Holocaust. The Jewish population of Israel is close to six million; there are also a million and a half Israeli Arabs; but what is that in terms of terrorist philosophy? - a population of suicide-bombers, say.

Soon after Hitler came to power in 1933, Alfred Rosenberg published his anti-Semitic and anti-Christian The Myth of the Twentieth Century, which sold a million copies.

One historian has noted:

"In July 1935, at the height of the controversy over Rosenberg's attacks on the churches, a speaker told a meeting of the Nazi Students' League in Bernau: 'One is either a Nazi or a committed Christian.' 'Christianity', he said, 'promotes the dissolution of racial ties and of the national racial community ... . We must repudiate the Old and New Testaments, since for us the Nazi idea is decisive. For us there is only one example, Adolf Hitler, and no one else.'"

A song sung in public by the Hitler Youth at the 1934 Nuremberg Party Rally went:

We are the jolly Hitler Youth,
We don't need any Christian truth
For our leader Adolf Hitler, our Leader,
Always is our interceder.

Whatever the Papist priests may try,
We're Hitler's children until we die;
We follow not Christ but Horst Wessel.
Away with incense and holy water vessel!

As sons of our forebears from times gone by
We march as we sing with banners held high,
I'm not a Christian, nor a Catholic,
I go with the SA through thin and thick.

"Not the cross", they sang, "but the swastika is redemption on earth". (Richard J. Evans, The Third Reich in Power, 1933-1939, Allen Lane/Penguin Books, 2005).

In the 1930s in England, we had Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts, mostly unemployed thugs. At the other extreme was the Anglo-German Fellowship with a membership including titled aristocracy and Guards officers; it was Hitler's mouthpiece in Britain.

Today I make no distinction between the supporters of those who planned and carried out Hitler's Holocaust and today's journalists who are condemning Israel in its legitimate efforts to prevent a second holocaust, promised by Iran and not loudly condemned by the Arab world.
