Motherhood devalued (letter)

by Sean Duffy

News Weekly, May 13, 2006

Sir,

Mother's Day (Sunday, May 14) is an opportunity to consider the status of motherhood in Australian society, particularly in light of recent calls for gay marriage.

If gay marriage supporters believe mothers are not essential to the ideal childrearing environment, they devalue motherhood. But if they do appreciate the unique role of mothers, how can gay marriage advocates justify giving two men equal status to a married mother and father?

Sean Duffy,
Eight Mile Plains, Qld.
