Neglect of public infrastructure (letter)

by Jim Manwaring

News Weekly, April 9, 2005

The report of Dr Peter Brain's address to the NCC annual conference, "The economy that will confront the next generation" (News Weekly, March 12, 2005) contains important information on the worrying condition of the Australian economy.

Dr Brain spoke of Australia's need for "well-administered public investment [that] can yield a high economic return". In particular, he mentioned European and North American studies which have shown that "the economic return on public sector investment can range between 30 and 70 per cent per annum".

In light of our neglect of infrastructure in this country, any further information that Dr Brain could provide on this subject would be useful and, I think, of interest to News Weekly readers.
