Anthony Cappello's review of Fitzgerald's The Pope's Battalions
- a poor attempt at documenting Bob Santamaria's lifetime work - pinpoints some key inaccuracies and misjudgements.
A close examination of the book shows some further inaccuracies - e.g., Archbishop Pell was not Bishop of Ballarat, there was never a Bishop O'Carroll in Ballarat and the DLP did not even have 25,000 members nationally let alone in WA.
The book also contains at least 38 misconceptions and 12 or so major omissions. For instance, the only mention of the relationship between the Jesuits and the Movement is a reference to Fr Lalor, while Fr Smith, Fr Fahey and Fr Muirhead are not mentioned at all and Fr Duffy's book on the DLP is used as a reference without explaining the Jesuits' fundamental role in the development of the NCC through the Institute of Social Order, Belloc House and Social Survey
