Sir,

The revelation that the GST propaganda bill will reach $616 million by June next year puts paid to the shallow claim, oft' quoted by the Treasurer, that they were simplifying the tax system.

Mr Costello wouldn't know any more than the Canberra boffin who recently claimed that filling out the Business Activity Statement (BAS) was no more difficult than programming a video recorder.

A friend, who runs an electrical goods store, told me recently that over 90 per cent of VCR owners are unable to programme them in advance.
